Keeping Shrimp:
Shrimp are best suited in aquariums with plants as they love to eat algae. Java moss, java fern and moss balls are a perfect combination for shrimp. A darker substrate and/or background will encourage shrimp to develop their full colour potential. Shrimp prefer species only tanks however can live alongside small fish. As a rule of thumb, fish will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. Tetras and Neons make great tank mates.
Behaviour:
Shrimp are very active and constantly forage for food or algae. Female shrimp will seclude themselves when carrying eggs so it is important that they have areas to hide.
Diet:
Shrimp are predominantly algae eaters, however their diet can be subsided with a high quality shrimp food, algae wafers or boiled vegetables. It is important to check for copper content on food as this is poisonous to shrimp. Please see our food ranges for shrimp, snail and crayfish safe foods.
Breeding:
Breeding couldn't be any more straight forward. Shrimp are prolific breeders and this will occur naturally. It will take between 20 to 30 days for females eggs to hatch (into miniature versions of adults). Increasing the tank temperature can help to encourage breeding. Water changes will cause the shrimp to moult and release pheromones which is another great way to induce breeding.
Acclimating Shrimp to the Aquarium:
The best way to add shrimp to the aquarium is to use the drip acclimate method over a period of 1.5-2.5 hrs. By doing this it allows the shrimp to adjust to the new parameters of the tank including temperature, PH and water hardness. This will reduce the chances of shock and stress on the shrimp allowing them to live long healthy lives!
Drip Acclimate Method:
Pour the bag into a suitable container (lunch box, large bowl). Use airline tubing with a control nozzle to syphon the water from your aquarium into the container. If you do not have spare air line tubing you can add small amounts of tank water to the container periodically. Once you have increased the amount of water in the container by 4 X your shrimp are ready to add to their new home.
