Keeping Snails:

Snails are perfect aquarium inhabitants for beginners. Snails are best suited in aquariums with plants as they love to eat algae and biofilm. It’s a good idea to leave algae and biofilm to grow in the aquarium, it’s important not to clean all of the algae from the glass and ornaments so the snails have a source of food. Shrimp make perfect tankmates for snails.

Behaviour:

Snails will spend most of their time foraging for food. You will see them in areas which are high in algae and biofilm.

Diet:

The staple diet for snails is algae and biofilm. Although their diet can be subsided with algae wafers or shrimp food. Like shrimp it is important foods do not have a high copper content as this is poisonous to snails. Snails also need a source of calcium to help develop strong and healthy shells.

Breeding:

Most aquarium snails will not breed in freshwater. To successfully breed aquarium snails brackish or saltwater is needed for the eggs to hatch.

Acclimating Snails to the Aquarium:

The best way to add snails to the aquarium is to use the drip acclimate method over a period of 1.5-2.5 hrs. By doing this it allows the snails to adjust to the new parameters of the tank including temperature, PH and water hardness. This will reduce the chances of shock and stress on the snails allowing them to live long healthy lives!

Drip Acclimate Method:

Pour the bag into a suitable container (lunch box, large bowl). Use airline tubing with a control nozzle to syphon the water from your aquarium into the container. If you do not have spare air line tubing you can add small amounts of tank water to the container periodically. Once you have increased the amount of water in the container by 4 X your snails are ready to add to their new home.
